Caring For and Maintaining Your Hoya
Hoya is a native of Asia and will quickly bring a tropical feeling to your home. Hoya have thick, waxy leaves that create trailing vines from planters or hanging baskets. Highly adaptable to indoor environments, this plant also likes to be outside during the spring and early summer.
Sunlight: Hoya doed best in medium bright indirect light. Hoyas will often enjoy a couple of hours of direct sunlight in the mornings, but not the entire day. If you want to help ensure the growth of the beautiful flowers for which Hoya is known, keep your Hoya out of the shade and in medium bright light.
Water: Hoya’s thick leaves allow it to retain quite a bit more water than its tropical cousins—so make sure you allow your Hoya to dry out completely between waterings. If you go too long between waterings, Hoya leaves will wrinkle a bit, signaling to you to break out the watering can and give it a good drink.
Humidity: Colorado is a dry state with humidity levels much lower than the native environments in which Hoya inhabit. To help create a more humid environment for your Hoya, consider adding a fine mist humidifier to the room(s) in which you have your Hoya. You can also place trays filled with stones and water nearby your Hoya to increase local humidity. Misting your Hoya with a hand sprayer will also help raise the local humidity level. Although the more humidity the better, a constant relative humidity of 50-55% will promote your Hoya’s growth and health.
Temperature: Like most houseplants, Hoya prefers temperatures in the range of 65-85 degrees F (18-30 degrees C). Avoid having your Hoya experience temperatures below 60 degrees F (15 degrees C).
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. We recommend either Fertilome or Fox Farm Potting mix.
