Spruces
When we think of spruce trees, we usually think of the Colorado Blue Spruce, the official state tree of Colorado, which can grow as tall as 60’ and as wide as 30’. But not all spruces get so big. Indeed, even within the Colorado Blue Spruce family, we find a wide variety of sizes and shapes. Spruces make excellent specimen trees in the yard that will attract the attention of passersby, or when planted together, they can form impenetrable privacy screens. Whether you want a large conifer like the Blue Spruce or something smaller, like the North Star, Norway, or Fat Albert spruce, Brady’s West has just the right spruce tree for you!
Here’s a fun fact: Blue Spruces are actually green. Their blue color is caused by a genetically-produced wax on the surface of their needles. This wax is easily rubbed off, leaving behind a deep green color. Use of pesticides, air pollution and poor nutrition can also cause the wax to disappear. Actually, some Blue Spruces aren’t blue at all—they are basically all green except for new growth, which is blue. So, don’t let anyone tell you that a green-colored spruce tree cannot possibly be a Blue Spruce!
